Virtus is pleased to announce that France will host the 2022 World Football Championships.
The event, held every four years, will be hosted by the Federation Francais Sport Adapt (FFSA) and will take place across 5 cities in the Ill De France region surrounding Paris.
FFSA are long supporters of Virtus events having successfully hosted the 2016 European Football Championships and numerous athletics, futsal and skiing events in recent years. John Ball, Chair of the Virtus Football Committee said “The 2018 championship in Sweden was a fantastic event and I have no doubt that France will be looking to go a step further. I would like to thank FFSA and wish them every success as they prepare to host the event”.
The Organising Committee hope that by hosting the event it will raise the profile of sport for athletes with an intellectual impairment just two years before the nation hosts the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The 2022 event will also see some changes to the format of the competition. For the first time, the top 8 ranked teams will go into the World Championship pool whilst teams ranked 9th or lower will go into a separate Challenge Cup competition. The 2018 edition saw 7 teams compete from 4 regions, however the new format will make the event accessible for many more nations.
